A USED floor scale will be really cheap and a great deal, right?

We get asked this question all the time.... Do you have any used floor scales? When we answer that we do and then give the caller or emailer the price, they act like we're out of our mind. Why do you think that is? Well, the customer does not understand that there are differences in the "floor scales" of today versus the floor scales that were made back in the 1990's. Back in the 90's a floor scale was built for durability and longevity. We have rented some of those old floor scales for years and years and they hardly ever have any failures.

The floor scales of today are built to sell. In the fast paced world we live in now called the 21st century, every customer searches the internet and calls tons of different dealers asking for quotes. Then, they search all the auction sites and then finally after all that research they have found their floor scale. What was the deteriming factor for most of these customers? Have any guesses? May we suggest the price is the number one factor for most of these folks.

We're not going to hammer the same points that we always do about floor scales. Well, ok we'll mention them briefly. You have to look at more than just price when you are buying floor scales, especially these ultra cheap models that are out right now. You have to understand that most of these are being built in China and have little or no quality control at all. When you get the scale, it should work long enough for you to reply with good feedback and then after that you're on your own. And good luck reading the operator manual. Also, many of the sellers of these floor scales are not exactly scale experts.

Getting back to the main point of this article, so with many cheap floor scales being sold today at dirt cheap prices, why would you expect to pay even less for a high quality used floor scale that was built a few years ago? That's kind of like saying I'm going to buy that pre-owned Cadillac or Lexus over there for less money than the new Yugo on the dealer's lot. In other words you need to look at this floor scale purchase in realistic terms.

In general, when we sell one of our old and rugged used floor scales, we can honestly say it has been a very good scale. In many cases they were either GSE gator decks or Rice Lake Roughdecks and they were built tough. Were they $400 each with free shipping? No way. They were much more expensive than that because the quality and durability was very good with these scales.

So to summarize our points, if you're looking for a floor scale you really need to do your homework and decide how much money you are going to spend and how important is the scale to your business. If you are only going to use the scale once or twice or a few times a year then you can probably get away with buying some cheap auction floor scale. But, if the scale is going to be used pretty often then you really should invest in something that has a proven track record of performance and durability. In addition to used floor scales we also offer some very good brand new floor scales like the Salter Brecknell DCSB floor scales and the Pennsylvania 6600 series. We also have brand new Roughdeck scales too.
